How to Track and Manage Subscriptions

1. Audit the last 90 days of statements

Open your bank and credit-card statements for the last three months. Three months catches quarterly and annually-billed services that wouldn't show up in a single statement. Highlight every charge that repeats — Netflix, Spotify, iCloud, ChatGPT, that gym you stopped going to, the domain you renewed in 2022.

Tip: search for keywords like "recurring", "subscription", "monthly", and the names of common services.

2. Put every subscription in one place

A note on your phone works. A spreadsheet works better. For each one, record:

• Service name
• Monthly cost (convert annual plans to a per-month figure)
• Billing cycle (monthly, yearly, etc.)
• Next renewal date
• Whether you've actually used it in the last 30 days

3. Cancel anything you haven't used in 30 days

This is the hardest step and the most valuable. If you haven't opened it, watched it, or logged into it in a month, cancel. You can always resubscribe — most services will even offer a discount to win you back.

Cancel directly with the provider, not through a third party that takes a cut of the savings. Save the cancellation confirmation email in case the charge shows up again.
